Tanum Petroglyphs "The Lovers" Drinking Horn
This horn has been hand carved with the famous "The Lovers" petroglyphs from Tanum in Sweden, which have been inked in striking red.
The design is based on the"The Lovers" rock carvings in Tanum, Sweden, also known as the Holy Bride and Groom or the Bridal Couple. The motif shows a man and a woman kissing in a loving embrace. The petroglyph is part of the Vitlycke panel, which contains approximately 500 different images dating from all parts of the period when rock carvings were made in Bohuslän, from 1700 B.C. to 300 B.C.

The Tanum rock carvings, or petroglyphs, depict scenes from daily life, human interaction, hunting, animals, love, magic, travel and power.
In Tanum, The Lovers are accompanied by another man with a raised axe to the left of the pair. The Vitlycke Museum speculates that perhaps this is a picture of a prehistoric ritual wedding that perhaps took place every year to bring good harvests and healthy livestock. The man with the axe on the left could then be a leader of the ritual who conducts the ceremony and blesses the couple with his axe.
In total, there are thousands of images called the Tanum Petroglyphs on about 600 panels within the World Heritage Area. These are concentrated in distinct areas along a 25 km stretch and cover an area of about 51 hectares.

All our horn products are completely handmade in our Yorkshire-based workshop, so please be aware that there is a production time of around four weeks once the order has been placed.
All our horn products are handmade in our Yorkshire-based workshop. All horns arrive in their completely natural state. We then sand, polish and line the inside of each individual piece. All designs are drawn on and carved entirely by hand.
The inside of the horn has been extensively cleaned and then lined using food-grade beeswax. We try to keep everything as authentic and organic as possible, which is why we opt for a deodorized beeswax lining rather than a polyurethane one. Because we use natural wax, the horn isn't suitable for hot drinks. All drinking horns and mugs come with a set of care instructions.
Our horns come without a stand unless specified otherwise. All our stands are made exclusively for Horns of Odin by our U.K based blacksmith and can be found in the "horn accessories" section.
These horns are made to order, so may differ from the product pictures. If you have a preferred colour horn, please leave a message with your order, and we will do everything we can to accommodate.
