Helm of Awe Drinking Horn
This horn has been hand carved with an image of the Helm of Awe (Ægishjálmr) and coloured with black ink.
Helm of Awe (Icelandic: Ægishjálmr, Old Norse Œgishjalmr) - The Helm of Awe is one of the most well know, and powerful Norse symbols; and often represents strength and protection. It is believed that warriors would paint the symbol on their foreheads before battle, with the intention of striking fear into the hearts of their opponents.
The arms of the symbol appear to be made up of the rune Algiz, often symbolising protection and prevailing over one's enemies.
In Fáfnismál (Poetic Edda poem), the dragon Fafnir attributes much of his power and apparent invincibility to the "Helm of Awe", a physical object that Sigurd takes from the dragon's lair after he slays Fafnir in the Volsunga Saga (Saga of the Volsungs).
The Helm of Awe
I wore before the sons of men
In defence of my treasure;
Amongst all, I alone was strong,
I thought to myself,
For I found no power a match for my own.
Fáfnismál: Stanza 16

All our horn products are completely handmade in our Yorkshire-based workshop so please be aware there is a production time of around four weeks once the order has been placed.
If the option of adding a name is chosen, please leave us a message in the order notes or send us an email stating which name you would like engraved. If a name is chosen but not provided, we will send you ONE email to request which name you want carved. If we receive no feedback within two weeks of said email, we will send the horn without a name; and no refund will be given.
All our horn products are handmade in our Yorkshire-based workshop. All horns arrive in their completely natural state. We then sand, polish and line the inside of each individual piece. All designs are drawn on and carved entirely by hand.
The inside of the horn has been extensively cleaned and then lined using food-grade beeswax. We try to keep everything as authentic and organic as possible, which is why we opt for a deodorized beeswax lining rather than a polyurethane one. Because we use natural wax, the horn isn't suitable for hot drinks. All drinking horns and mugs come with a set of care instructions.
Our horns come without a stand unless specified otherwise. All our stands are made exclusively for Horns of Odin by our U.K based blacksmith and can be found in the "horn accessories" section.
These horns are made to order, so may differ from the product pictures. If you have a preferred colour horn, please leave a message with your order, and we will do everything we can to accommodate.
