Bjorn's Drinking Horn

Who was Bjorn?

This drinking horn has been inspired by Viking king; Bjorn Ironside. According to Norse legend, Bjorn Ironside was the son of notorious Viking warrior and king, Ragnar Lothbrok. Bjorn is said to have avenged his father's murder, along with the other "Sons of Ragnar", before they collectively raided further into England, Normandy, France and Lombardy. After reaching Italy, the "Sons of Ragnar" split up the kingdom they had amassed, with Bjorn claiming Sweden and the iconic Uppsala (and its Temple).

Bjorn (Old Norse for Bear) fought with ferocity, as though the embodiment of a Bear, and with such devastating effectiveness, that he earned the moniker: Ironside. to his warriors, and enemies, it appeared their king could not be harmed by any man made iron weapon.

Bjorn's Finial

This legend is the inspiration behind the stunning finial which is the centerpiece of Bjorn's Drinking Horn. The finial features a bear head showing its teeth and ready for battle, the animal embodiment of Bjorn's fury and warrior prowess. Above are the runes Ansuz, Laguz and Uruz which spell "ALU". ALU carvings have been found as part of numerous Runic inscriptions across England and Scandinavia. The meaning of the mysterious word has been disputed, with the general consensus among scholars being that it represents Rune Magic or a metaphor for it.

Could this be how Bjorn was capable to remain unharmed by any human produced iron?

  • Capacity:  250- 400 ml
  • Bear finial with "ALU" runes
  • High gloss polish
  • Handcrafted in the U.K
  • Beeswax lined
  • Copper knotwork horn rim
  • Name in Runes - Tim

All our horn products are handmade in our Yorkshire-based workshop. All horns arrive in their completely natural state. We then sand, polish and line the inside of each individual piece. All designs are drawn on and carved entirely by hand.

The inside of the horn has been extensively cleaned and then lined using food-grade beeswax. We try to keep everything as authentic and organic as possible, which is why we opt for a deodorized beeswax lining rather than a polyurethane one. Because we use natural wax, the horn isn't suitable for hot drinks. All drinking horns and mugs come with a set of care instructions.

WHAT IS A SEAX?

The word Seax appears to be an Old English / Anglo Saxon word for knife. The term has come to cover a wide variation of different knives. The most common characteristics are:

  • - A large single edged blade.
  • - A tang in the centre line of blade. Often inserted into an organic material handle.
  • - The scabbard (and blade) worn horizontally on the belt.
  • - The blade tends to face upwards when in the scabbard.

SEAX CARE

Seaxes are supplied with a small tin of our signature linseed oil and beeswax blend, as well as being treated before being shipped.

High Carbon steel is not 100% water resistant, and requires the regular application of oil (or our wax blend) to keep the seax looking its best.
